This first phase of the "DNA in Textiles" project was fully funded by Yorkshire Forward in collaboration with the Textile Centre of Excellence, and its consortium of companies. CuteCircuit’s HugShirt gets Ministerial approval
Wearing the HugShirt and smiling broadly, the UK Minister for Trade and Investment, Lord Mervyn Davies received a tele-hug transmitted from across the pavilion. The latest prototype of the HugShirt was unveiled last week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the world’s largest trade fair for the mobile telecommunication industry. The Minister was not the only one to try the HugShirt in Barcelona where all of the 45,000 visitors were invited to the CuteCircuit booth to try it on and experience the HugShirt for themselves.

Stamford, CT – Hexcel today announced that it has received a 2008 Boeing Performance Excellence Award. The Boeing Company issues the awards annually to recognize suppliers who have achieved superior performance. Santoni clarifies jobs position and gears up for economic recovery

Chinese invest in FDY polyester production for warp knits
Remscheid – According to Swiss textile machinery manufacturer Oerlikon Barmag, the demand for top-quality polyester Fully Drawn Yarn (FDY) is growing significantly, particularly in the Chinese market. The company says that yarn qualities for further processing using high-speed warp-knitting methods have been in especially high demand over the past few months
The warp-knitting process which is especially good for producing mesh fabrics requires particularly even yarn, as even the smallest irregularities in the yarn have a negative impact on both the production process and the appearance of the fabric surface. The spectrum of warp-knitted goods ranges from the finest tulle and lace, robust netting and elastic linings all the way through to high-end plush.

Migdal Ha'emek, Israel - Nylon 6.6 producer Nilit, has named its recently launched recycled yarns Eco-Care. Eco-Care is produced from a mix of polymer waste and other polymers. The company says that the development represents a breakthrough in yarn engineering and production.
The garment opposite was knitted seamlessly with Eco-Care yarn on a 13 inch diameter, 28 gauge Santoni SM8-8 TOP machine. The yarn is a 70/40/2 SD recycled yarn plated with 22 spandex covered with 19/7 Nilit Eversheer yarn. Nilit Eversheer is modified PA-66 which the company developed for covering spandex, with a very high shrinkage rate. This special covered yarn helps to close the knitted loops and the result is a much stronger net or mesh knit application. Nilit says that the recycled Eco-Care can be dyed at the same depth as regular PA-66.

Remscheid - Industrial textiles are the great white hope of the classical textile nations following China’s ascent to the position as the world’s largest apparel manufacturer. They are the innovation drivers for many small and medium-sized companies throughout the world.
Industrial textiles fill those areas of application that nobody had even considered 10 or even just 5 years ago. All in all, they are therefore an important reason that the ancient craft of textiles is still very much alive and active.
The field of industrial textiles comprises such diverse products as fishing nets and sacks, protective clothing and sails, vehicle tarpaulins and artificial skin or more commodity products like tarpaulins, safety-belts, conveyor / transmission belts, hoses, ropes, nets and tire-cord.
One area enjoying increasing popularity of late is geotextiles. One reason for this is advancing global industrialization, which would be inconceivable without the expansion of local infrastructures, and in particular roads. Large countries such as India, Russia and China are already carrying out, or plan to do so, major projects for improving their infrastructures, with the consequence that the geotextiles sector can look forward to a promising future.

45 year old Dr. Preßl has a doctorate in business administration and was employed for many years in a variety of managerial positions at Siemens AG, where he was mainly involved with solving IT applications for use in production control and with business analysis within the area of corporate finance. He was also the commercial director for drive and automation technology products and in his last few years at Siemens AG, Dr. Preßl was the commercial director of the Electronic Assembly Systems, and later of Dematic Holding and Dematic GmbH in Luxembourg and Offenbach.
From 2005 up to the time when he took on this new position, Dr. Preßl, in his role as Commercial Director, was responsible for the carve-out of Dematic from the Siemens Group into medium-sized, independent companies, as well as for restructuring them. He became the commercial director of Dematic’s global business, which operated as a medium-sized, independent company.

Eurojersey launches ultra fine fabrics but puts further investment on hold
Paris – Italian warp knitter Eurojersey has launched Sensitive Touch, a new extra fine gauge range of ‘next to skin’ silk like fabrics based on its Sensitive technology for stretch fabrics here at Premiere Vision. Sensitive is a unique system of patented, ‘made in Italy’ fabrics with a high Lycra content available until now in a range of hands and weights from 117gsm to 350gsm. The new Sensitive Touch, which is knitted on 36 gauge tricot machines, weighs in at only 89 gsm with 28% Lycra.
A spokesperson for Eurojersey told KnittingIndustry.com that although the company could see a bright future for its extra fine Sensitive Touch fabrics, it was anticipating a general downturn in business in the next six months due to the global economic recession and this has meant that the company has had to temporarily shelve its plans for investing in more fine gauge machinery. 12 February 2009, Osaka - The Teijin Group announced today that Thai Namsiri Intertex Co., Ltd. (TNI), a consolidated subsidiary manufacturing polyester textiles in Thailand, will launch a program for collecting used polyester items and then recycling them into new polyester materials through Teijin's ECO CIRCLE(tm) closed-loop recycling system. This will be the first such program launched by Teijin in Asia other than Japan.
The program includes the launch of a recyclable men’s jacket made of 100% polyester, branded KOH MR. SAXMAN in collaboration with a famous Thai saxophone player who goes by the same name. Distribution will be handled by Cassardi International Co., Ltd., an apparel company in the Boonsiri International Group, a leading distributor of men's wear in Thailand.

10 February 2009, Paris - Italian spinner Filati Maclodio are promoting their Milkofil range of yarns this season at Expofil. This is an innovative organic and healthy yarn derived from milk. This extraordinary yarn is particularly suited for contact with the skin in clothing, underwear, and bedding. Fibre that is made from casein, which is the main protein in milk, has long-term emissions of negative ions. It is thus beneficial for air quality, it stimulates blood circulation, is a natural antibacterial agent and is sterile. The fibre can be seen used in combinations of many other natural fibres such as cotton, linen, silk and cashmere, and even with Lempur which is a wood fibre. The milk fibre forming anything between 35% to 70% of the total composition.

Australian wool inspires new directions in Australian fashion
Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) will again present the Designer Award at the 2009 L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival (LMFF) on 17 March.
This year’s finalists – Ant!podium, Ellery, Gary Bigeni, Konstantina Mittas, Romance Was Born, and Therese Rawsthorne – will vie for the coveted 2009 prize and a chance to join the ranks of fashion designers who have been honoured by the Woolmark® brand, one of the world’s most recognized textile symbols.
In addition to a $10,000 cash prize, the winner of the LMFF Designer Award presented by Woolmark® will receive special introductions to AWI’s global supply chain network of spinners, knitters, and mills in conjunction with an AWI-hosted trip to either Pitti Filati (Florence) or Premier Vision (Paris).
A highlight of the annual LMFF program and hotly contested within the fashion industry, the Designer Award presented by Woolmark® provides valuable educational and business development opportunities for Australian fashion designers in the early stages of their career.

World retailers told wool supply linked to price
A delegation representing Australia’s woolgrowers has told customers throughout Europe that continued supply of Australian wool depends on a fair price being paid.
The delegation led by Yass woolgrower Barry Walker, Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) Director Dr Meredith Sheil and AWI Strategic Adviser Stuart McCullough met with processors in Italy, Germany and the UK and delivered a powerful message … “if you want the world’s best wool – produced to the world’s highest ethical standards – then you just have to ask for it and pay for it”.
According to Barry Walker the realisation that large amounts of ethically produced wool were already on the market came as a relief to processors.
“It was an important trip … so that we could look these customers in the eye and assure them the Australian industry had listened to their concerns,” Mr Walker said.
“We were able to tell them that in the six months since the introduction of the National Wool Declaration (July 08), over 68,000 bales or more than 10 million kilos had been sold identified as either Non-Mulesed (NM), Ceased Mulesed (CM) or Mulesed with Pain Relief (PR).
“This represents a greater amount of apparel wool than from any other major wool producing country - like New Zealand, South Africa or Uruguay.”
AWI Chairman Wal Merriman said informing international customers empowered them to purchase Australian wool knowing they could satisfy their corporate social responsibility policies.
“We are encouraging retailers and processors to source their wool in line with their corporate social responsibility standards through their existing supply chain arrangements.
“Wool is now clearly identified and readily available through the auction system and supply chain alliances”, he said.
“While this milestone is great news, AWI continues its investment in the pursuit of better animal welfare outcomes and alternative flystrike prevention solutions.
“Millions of dollars has been spent to-date on projects such as clips, intradermals, breeding, integrated parasite management and pain relief studies.
“AWI remains focused on developing viable alternatives and we have in-fact increased program expenditure since the change of the AWI Board in November 2008.
He said AWI continued to research viable alternatives and present shareholders with a range of choices for them to use in their wool-growing enterprises.

On account of its multidirectional elasticity, the XFIT LYCRA® fabric has allowed the students to create a variety of different styles without limiting their creativity. All of the outfits offer outstanding comfort in wear, a perfect fit and a long lasting shape even after repeated wear and wash thanks to the benefits of XFIT LYCRA® fabric. Using this innovative fabric, the students can also create garments which have 360° freedom of movement even around difficult areas such as the knees, hips, waist or seams.

Sustainable development, respect for the environment, ecology, recycling,… those are some of the final consumer’s concerns that the textile chain has been gradually integrating and that can be found in the collections of the fibre producers and spinners exhibiting at the forthcoming Expofil that will be held from 10 to 13 February 2009 at Parc d’Expositions de Paris-Nord Villepinte. However, performance is not left aside as shown in technological innovations applied in spinning as well as in treatments. Firmly anchored to the realities of market, Expofil has always favoured an approach that made it possible to give visitors a comprehensive, yet selective, offer that suits their needs precisely.
36 spinners and fibre producers from 15 countries have already registered for the next edition, among them 2 newcomers:
MITSUBISHI RAYON (Japan): This important Japanese group produces, among other fibres, 120 000 tons of acrylic fibres annually, of which 90% are exported. It will present at Expofil a range of products with special properties : anti-pilling (Vonnel H6 Series), anti-static (Corebrid-B), super fine denier fibre (Miyabi) and Funcle, a flat cross-section fibre. Its main markets are knitting (flat-bed and circular), hosiery, hand-knitting yarns and technical uses.
DARE GLOBAL-SINODENIM (China): This company, specialising in dyeing and finishing, presents CPRD (Continuous Pigment Ring Dyeing), an environmentallyfriendly new pigment dyeing process that allows an energy saving of 40% and a 95% water reduction. Its annual production capacity is 3 000 tons of dyed yarns, in a wide range of colours and fibres (bamboo, linen, Modal, viscose, cotton, polyester, Spandex, Tencel, etc.). These yarns are aimed at apparel weaving and flat-bed knitting.
We also see the return of the Italian spinner FILMAR, specialist of 100% long staple, mercerized, Egyptian cotton.
Designed this season by Dutch designer Mies Splinter, the Expofil forum is an inviting way for buyers to discover, as in a jewel case, the spinners and fibre producers’
products. The space is conceived as an unfolded house, a curio cabinet, with unexpected openings, poetic passages, disconcerting seethrough. It builds up a precious and sophisticated showcase of artistic know-how for the preview of yarns and fibres for autumn-winter 2010/11. This intimate space features interferences, with a winter season evolving between discretion, palpitations, precautions, perturbations and exaggerations. A space that unfurls and brings to broad daylight the updated products for spring summer 2010 as well as technological advances and fibre innovations.
The yarn/fabric cooperation continues in the «Pulsation» forum of hall 5, designed by Matali Crasset. In this area, a specific space is dedicated this season to environmentally- or human-friendly products. Developments centered on technological advances, especially in finishing processes, will be displayed alongside the innovations of fibre producers, spinners and weavers.

Geosynthetics demand to increase to $2.1 billion in 2012
A new study from The Freedonia Group Inc., shows that demand for geosynthetics is projected to advance 2.5 percent annually to over 900 million square yards in 2012, valued at $2.1 billion. Gains will be promoted by rebounding road and highway construction spending. The study also says that in the near term, demand is also expected to be promoted by components of the Obama Administration’s economic stimulus program that involve public works.
Geosynthetics are used to stabilize foundations, promote drainage and prevent erosion, generally at a lower cost than alternative products. Demand for high-performance geosynthetics, such as geomembranes, geogrids and preformed geocomposites, will outpace demand for less costly geosynthetics the study says. Visitors to Pitti Filati are cautiously optimistic
The themes, colours and preliminary basic inspirations for the collections we will see in the markets in eighteen months time, got off to a fine start at Pitti Immagine Filati. The 64th edition (Florence, 28-30 January 2009) ended on a note of confidence notwithstanding the economic problems cutting across the international stage. According to organisers, visitors from industry who attended the show expressed their determination to start production for the coming seasons with a positive attitude.
As could be expected in these catastrophic economic times, visitor numbers were down with the final figures showing that 3,900 buyers attended the fair compared to the 4,700 who came to the last winter edition in January 2008. 37% of visitors were foreigners and 2468 were Italian.

European brands choose Thermocool
Exactly one year after launching at ispo Winter 2008, many leading sports and outdoor brands are already incorporating Advansa’s Thermocool thermo regulating fibre into their collections, which are on show at ispo Winter 09 this week, the company said today.
Born out of the experience and years of study on human thermoregulation from the privileged platform of profiled cross section products, Thermocool consists of a unique blend of fibres inside the yarns that interact with the wearer. The hybrid fibre mix provides dual functionality. Firstly, when the user is hot and perspiring, the fabric provides evaporative cooling, keeping the user cool and comfortable. Secondly, when the user is cold and shivering, the fabric reduces the exposure impact with external temperatures, keeping the user warm and thermo regulated. Advansa says that, for customers concerned about the environment, Thermocool is also available in an ECO version that uses a polymer made from renewable resources, instead of traditional petrochemical derivates. In the case of Thermocool the renewable resource is corn.

The Teijin Group announced today that it will participate in Premiere Vision Preview New York, the fabrics and trends showcase that will take place at the Altman Building & Metropolitan Pavilion in New York on January 14 and 15.
Teijin Fibers Limited, the core company of Teijin Group's polyester polymers, fibres and textiles business, will organize its exhibition with N.I. Nilit scales up recycled yarns
Migdal Ha'emek, Israel - Nilit, a global leader in the production of nylon 6.6, has announced that it has recently completed the scale-up of its recycled yarns, a unique combination produced from polymer waste and other polymers. The company says that the development represents a breakthrough in yarn engineering and production.
