According to local media reports yesterday, Turkey has put a provisional 17% safeguard duty on the import of apparel products from the least developed countries (LDCs), including Bangladesh. The measure which includes knitwear and other knitted garments, is aimed at protecting Turkey’s domestic garment manufacturers.

Hawick Knitwear sees production rise
Scottish knitwear manufacturer Hawick Knitwear which announced an increase in turnover of 20% to £8 million in its latest accounts has increased its production to 9500 sweaters per week, from about 7500 per week last year.

Greek debut for new Thies iMaster H2O dyeing machine
Greek circular knitting company Komotex AG has taken delivery of the country’s first Thies iMaster H2O dyeing unit and claims to have achieved rapidly successful results.
The company produces ‘body width’ tubular fabrics, ranging in diameter between 20 and 90cm. Production Manager, Arno Stumpp says: “It is not easy to find a dyeing machine able to produce high quality results for such narrow and very sensitive articles.”

Karl Mayer opens repair centre for electronic components in China
Karl Mayer has set up a maintenance centre for the repair of electronic components from its warp knitting machines in China. The first of the service stations has been operating since November 2010 at Karl Mayer (China) Limited in Wujin and is said to have been extremely successful so far.

Gildan buys US sock company for U.S. $350 million
Canada’s Gildan Activewear, a leading apparel manufacturer, has announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire 100% of the ordinary shares of Gold Toe Moretz Holdings Corp. (Gold Toe Moretz) for a total purchase price of approximately U.S. $350 million. Under the agreement Gildan will not assume any of Gold Toe Moretz’s outstanding debts.

Study shows Dryarn offers high thermo-physiological comfort

Strong sales lift profits at Wolford
Innovative Austrian hosiery and lingerie manufacturing brand Wolford posted a strong third quarter 2010/11, continuing the positive trend of the first two quarters. Sales at the international fashion company in the first nine months of the current fiscal year (May 1, 2010 – January 31, 2011) rose by 6.6% to EUR 120.0 million, but operating performance indicators developed even more gratifyingly, with profit from continuing operations improving by 93% on the previous year, from EUR 4.6 million to EUR 8.9 million.

Bangladesh now world's second largest knitted goods manufacturer
Bangladesh has become the world's second largest exporter of knitted goods, beating Turkey in terms of volume last year, a report in the country’s Financial Express said on Sunday.
